Benign tumors in women have become a serious health problem in the Philippines.
In the Philippines alone, more than 10 million women are living with breast tumors, uterine fibroids, and ovarian cysts, and millions more are facing dangerous complications caused by these tumors.

According to recent statistics from the Philippine Department of Health – WHO, 7 out of 10 adult women are found to have at least one type of benign tumor in their bodies. The rate of serious complications in middle-aged and older women is as high as 80%, especially in those over 45–50 years old with a history of endocrine disorders, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, or prolonged stress. Each year in the Philippines, more than 1,000 women are hospitalized and die from complications related to breast tumors, uterine fibroids, and ovarian cysts, such as severe anemia, prolonged bleeding, endocrine disorders, decreased fertility, organ compression, infections, surgical complications, and the risk of malignancy. These "benign" tumors are silently becoming a women's health crisis in the Philippines and globally.

If breast tumors, uterine fibroids, and ovarian cysts are left untreated for a long time, the tumors can increase in size, undergo cellular changes, and progress to cancer, directly threatening life. Many cases of malignant breast tumors, endometrial cancer, and ovarian cancer have been recorded as a result of not properly monitoring and treating benign tumors. When the disease progresses to a late stage, the risk of metastasis, multi-organ failure, and death increases significantly, especially in women over 45, those with prolonged endocrine disorders, weakened immune systems, or those who abuse hormone therapy without medical prescription.

Pay special attention if your body shows the following signs:

  • Breast tumors:
    - Palpable lump: May be hard, soft, mobile, or attached to the skin/chest wall.
    - Skin changes: Dimpled skin, redness, swelling, ulceration, rough texture resembling orange peel.

  • Ovarian cysts:
    - Dull pain in the lower abdomen, pelvis, and lower back (due to compression from a large cyst).
    - Menstruation: Menstrual disorders (irregular periods, abnormal bleeding between periods).
    - Compression: Abdominal bloating, distension, gas, frequent/difficult urination, constipation.
    - Pain during intercourse: Pain and discomfort during sex.
    - Other signs: Unexplained weight gain, fatigue, signs of masculinization (excessive hair growth, darkened skin) due to hormonal imbalance.

If breast tumors, uterine fibroids, and ovarian cysts are not detected and treated promptly, they can lead to particularly dangerous complications such as:

  • Cancer and metastasis: Uncontrolled tumor growth, malignant cell transformation, and spread to other organs such as the lungs, liver, bones, and brain – causing rapid disease progression and directly threatening life.

  • Severe bleeding: Uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts can cause prolonged menstrual bleeding, massive blood loss, severe anemia, body weakness, and death if not treated promptly.

  • Multiple organ failure: Large tumors compress the heart, lungs, kidneys, intestines, and bladder, disrupting vital functions and leading to heart failure, kidney failure, and respiratory failure.

  • Infection – sepsis: Necrotic tumors, cyst rupture, or severe inflammatory complications can cause systemic infection, sepsis, and rapid death.

  • Severe immunosuppression: prolonged weakening of the body due to endocrine disorders and chronic blood loss, reducing its ability to fight off bacteria and viruses, and increasing the risk of death from opportunistic infections.
Current treatment methods mainly involve hormone therapy and surgical removal of the tumors. Hormonal therapy often comes with side effects such as weight gain, mood disorders, and cardiovascular problems, while its effectiveness remains limited.

Surgical removal is usually recommended by doctors when the tumor has grown to a significant size, but this method has several drawbacks. Firstly, surgery can damage surrounding organs, impairing the function of the affected area. In the case of breast tumors, procedures such as tumor removal or mastectomy can cause cosmetic problems and significant psychological stress.

For uterine fibroids, procedures such as fibroid removal or hysterectomy carry risks of heavy bleeding, infection, and infertility. Similarly, with ovarian cysts, surgery can reduce ovarian reserve and affect fertility, especially if both ovaries need to be removed.

Recently, at the 2025 Health Work Implementation Conference, the Philippine Department of Health, in collaboration with the WHO, announced a new treatment method aimed at "effectively controlling and shrinking breast tumors, uterine fibroids, and ovarian cysts, stabilizing tumors, limiting complications, and restoring overall health for women."
Patients with new tumors, long-standing benign tumors, those previously dependent on hormone therapy, or facing the risk of cancer will all have access to this new treatment method instead of less effective traditional interventions.
